SF Gate ran an article today about the play Romance of Magno Rubio based on a short story by Carlos Bulosan and written by Lonnie Carter.
Below is an excerpt taken from the article:
Sometimes, in the urbane Bay Area, it’s easy to forget what an immediate, electric connection live theater can make to a particular audience. You couldn’t miss it with “Magno Rubio,” a kinetic piece of seriocomic storytelling about 1930s Filipino farmworkers set in and around Stockton and playing to a hometown crowd dominated by Filipino Americans.
Stockton in the 1930’s was probably home to the largest Filipino community in the United States. Carlos Bulosan, whom I would consider as one of the Filipinos Filipino-Americans should look up to, is a self-taught writer who voiced out the struggles he faced as a Filipino in a time of discrimination.
I invite everyone to see Romance of Magno Rubio Thursday to Sunday at the Skyline College Main Theater, 3300 College Drive, San Bruno. Tickets range from $45-$65. For more information please call (415) 401-7157 or go to www.brownpapertickets.com
